2-step verification (2SV) adds an extra layer of account security by requiring an additional step and guarantees that only you can access your account on PlayStation™Network.

Make sure you have read the information on How 2-Step Verification Works on PlayStation Network and have met the requirements for using 2-step verification.

Received a 2-Step Verification Text Message Unexpectedly?

If you receive a verification code that you haven't asked for, change your password immediately. See How to Reset Your PSN Password for instructions.

I Want to Turn 2-Step Verification Off

Check to see if you are signed in to one of your PlayStation® devices or PlayStation™Network on the website.

From your PlayStation®4 system

  • Go to [Settings] > [Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Security] > [2-Step Verification] > [Status].
  • Change status to [Inactive].

If signed into PlayStation™Network on the web

  • Go to the Account section > [Security].
  • Click on the 2-Step Verification link at the bottom of the Security page.
  • Select [Edit Status] > click the [Deactivate] button > [Yes].

To conf i rm the deactivation, you will receive a text on your mobile phone and an email on the email address associated with your account.

I Don't Have My Mobile Phone Anymore

If you created backup codes after activating 2-step verification and your mobile phone is lost, stolen, or have a new number, you can use the steps below to deactivate 2-step verification:

  1. From your PS4™ at the sign-in screen, press the Triangle button for [Trouble Receiving Code?] found at the bottom of the screen > [Cannot Access Mobile Phone].
  2. Select [Sign In Using Backup Code].
  3. Enter one of your backup codes. Each code can only be used once. Backup codes can only be generated after activating 2-step verification.

Didn't Receive a Verification Code When Tried to Log In

From your PS4™ at the sign-in screen, log in and select [Resend Code]. You should receive a text within 5–10 minutes.

How to Avoid Issues With 2-Step Verification

1. Generate Backup Codes

After you activate 2-step verification, generate backup codes to use when you don't have access to your phone or phone number for any reason. Backup codes work like a texted verification code and come in handy when you change your phone number, your battery is dead, or your phone is lost or stolen.

  • From your PS4™, go to [Settings] > [Account Management] >[Security] > Enter sign-In information. Then select [2-Step Verification] > [Backup Codes].
  • From web, sign in to PlayStation Network. Go to [Account] section > [Security] > click on the 2-Step Verification link at the bottom of the page > [Backup Codes].

Print or write down your backup codes and keep them in a safe place. In case you used all the backup codes, you can get more by deactivating 2-step verification and then re-activating it.

2. Pick the Right Phone for 2-Step Verification

Use a phone that:

  • Can receive text messages.
  • You own and keep with you.
  • It is your regular phone number and not your temporary phone number.

If you plan on getting a new phone number, be sure to [Deactivate] 2-step verification before you change your phone number.
